New Students
We welcome new and visiting students, as well as interested observers, at any of our noon or evening classes. If you would like to participate, please arrive 15 minutes early so you can sign a waiver. The dojo is located in SOMA at 141 11th Street.
What will my first class be like?
After arriving 15 minutes early, signing our waiver, and changing into your clothes, you’ll line up and bow in with the rest of the class. After we all warm up together, an advanced student will help you learn to roll and fall safely. We all work on these skills, called ukemi, for as long as we study aikido, and they’re just as important or more important than learning to throw. And then you’ll learn your first throw!
What should I wear?
Loose pants and a t-shirt that you feel comfortable falling down and rolling in are fine for your first class. The standard uniform is a judogi; students may purchase one from the dojo or procure their own.
What if I’m out of shape or uncoordinated?
If you can walk up and down a flight of stairs, you can do aikido. Compassion is at the heart of aikido practice, and all of us were beginners once. The freedom for each of us to progress at her own pace is built into the way we teach and train together.
How Much Does It Cost to Get Started?
Your first class with us is free. After that, ongoing tuition is $149 per month (Aikido & BJJ)
Full time students tuition is $129 per month (Aikido & BJJ)
BJJ only: $100 per month
Mat fee (single class without tuition): $25
